Bruce Haines, Mayfair

née Ancient & Modern

Established 2006, the gallery was called ‘Ancient & Modern’, located on Whitecross Street in a former second-hand record shop near Barbican. In 2015 it moved to 2nd floor rooms in St George Street, Mayfair, renamed eponymously after its owner. Over a decade, the gallery presented 60 exhibitions and participated at over 40 art fairs including Frieze, Art Cologne, Liste, Artissima, Nada and Armory.  In October 2016, the gallery took a break from programming, with Bruce starting a TECHNE funded PhD at Kingston University, Through interviews and recollections, he looked at the anthropology of emerging galleries and their contradictory relationships with ‘business’, while considering new models of working with artists. Simultaneously, and as a coda to this, Bruce Haines, Mayfair Limited completed the acquisition of ‘Intaglio Printmaker’, the authoritative supplier of materials to the artist-printmaker in the UK. In December 2023 it will commence publishing Intaglio Print, with its first edition made with Alan Kane.
